“As a volunteer helping immigrants practice English and study for the citizenship exam, I have learned as much as anyone. I have met people who go to work before dawn, who work twelve-hour days, who work more than one job, and who care deeply about their children’s well-being education and want them to have good lives. I’ve met people who contribute so much to our local community and are kind and generous neighbors. It has been a privilege to work with them.” Bob Brickhouse
Office Hours: This volunteer opportunity is to work right in the SB office. SB office is available by phone and in-person for walk-ins Monday to Thursday, from 2:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Our goal is to provide a welcoming environment of support where people are free to ask any question. As a volunteer, you will be in charge to greet the members, answer the phone, and do administrative tasks around the office. An SB Staff will orient them on the services and other information as best they can, and connect to other service providers where appropriate. Sign up for the office hours orientation here
Administrative Support: This opportunity is to help with specific services such as document translations, assisting clients to fill out forms & applications, making calls on behalf of our clients to mediate across language barriers, notarization, drafting of letters for various types of cases or needs, research, and a number of other actions within the capabilities of our staff and volunteers are also performed. This support can be provided the same day if clients are willing to wait or may be performed by appointment. Administration includes scheduling of appointment and follow up appointment, both involve reminder calls 1-2 days prior to the appointment. You are welcome to do this task per-request (at home) and use the SB office for appointments. For this opportunity, we request that you sign up and indicate that you are willing to help with these tasks. Indicate in the calendar which periods of time you would be available. Sign up for the orientation here
Rapid Response Hotline: In collaboration with other justice support organizations and volunteers, this hotline is intended to document local ICE enforcement activity and provide support to vulnerable individuals and their families where no support existed before it. It is also intended to provide a compassionate voice with know your rights information and connection to other networks that may be able to put eyes on the situation. Follow up support after the call to ensure families are connected to legal and other support are also part of the process. As a volunteer, you’ll have to receive 1-hour training, some practice calls, and materials for answering the call. This can be done from wherever, and you’ll get to sign up for shifts. Please check back for when training starts again!
Cville Sabroso: All day annual Latin-American festival of music, dance, food, and art held at IX Art Park on the 3rd Saturday of each September. We care very much for this festival as it is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions, the culture of a community that has historically been ignored. We hope to develop a growing sense of pride from the community and share this celebration with the wider Charlottesville population. The event requires extensive planning and coordination throughout the year, with the primary responsibility carried by SB volunteers. Over the years, we’ve tried to get other groups to partner with us to carry the event out as we struggle to meet the demands. If you are interested in hearing about this opportunity, please Send us an email to sign up as a volunteer for Cville Sabroso at: email@example.com
Help Fair and Multi-Cultural Health Festival: SB and collaborating organizations will carry out a full, one-day “Multicultural Health Festival” on October 12, 2019 as part of Charlottesville Welcoming Week festivities. Drawing on the expertise of collaborating organizations and individuals, a large menu of health services will be offered: eye exams and general eye health, audiology screening, dental examinations and teeth cleaning, mammogram screening, general medical counseling, cardiovascular and Diabetes Mellitus risk assessment, physical therapy demonstrations, acupuncture, mindfulness demonstration class, flu and tetanus vaccinations, and other services. This event is similar to the annual Help Fair SB organized for years until recently where it has transformed into the Multi-Cultural Health Festival.
